Top 10 Travel Quotes
1. “Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop
Travel Quote 1: Adventure is worthwhile by AESOP
Adventure is ALWAYS worth it…
Report this ad
It doesn’t get more simplistic than Aesop’s take on traveling, the ancient Greek fabulist and storyteller. This classic travel quote continues to inspire me.
Adventure can remind you to explore new horizons, and step out of your comfort zone. Like it did for me hiking 100 miles across Greenland’s Arctic Circle Trail!
2. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain
Travel Quote 2: Travel isn't pretty by Anthony Bourdain
Travel isn’t always pretty…
The late, great Anthony Bourdain really hit the nail on the head. I will truly miss his wisdom. Many think of traveling as a way to relax, and it absolutely can be!
However, I’ve also found traveling can help you understand what’s going on in the world. Like my trip to the Palestinian West Bank, which left me feeling both sad and angry. But I’m still glad I went.

Anais Nin’s quote about traveling on a constant search for things that will make us feel whole sums up the desire to keep learning through experiences. To discover ourselves just as much, if not more, than to discover new places.
I’ve felt this pull many times, like while road tripping through Morocco. Seeking out the vastness of the desert, and looking inward at the same time.
5. “A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill
Travel Quote 5: Memorable quote from Tim Cahill
A journey is best measured in friends…
I couldn’t agree more! I’ve made many friends around the world, and it’s the time I’ve spent with them that has made my travels so fulfilling. People are always more memorable than checking things off a bucket list.
Meet Pedro. We hired him as a guide to hike up a volcano in Guatemala. Through our broken Spanish, we learned he was quite the comedian! He was the highlight of the trip instead of the volcano.

No place is ever as bad…
Have you ever seen your hometown through the eyes of a tourist? It’s easy to get jaded, but the truth is every place in the world has something of interest.
You’ll always hear about the negative before you hear about the positive. Because people love to complain! Don’t listen to them, and go see for yourself.

17. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine

18. “Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca
When I travel, I’m able to give my mind something new and exciting to focus on. Studies say that we need to keep learning in order for our minds to thrive.
Mark Twain Inspiration
Twenty years from now…
19. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain (?)
While this is one of the most popular travel quotes of all time, it’s actually FAKE. Mark Twain never said this. The real author is H. Jackson Browne Jr. in his book PS I Love You, about letters written to his mom.

Peter Hoeg Travel Quote
Traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.
26. “Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.” – Ray Bradbury

27. “Traveling tends to magnify all human emotions.” — Peter Hoeg
I’ve been at my best, and at my absolute worst while traveling. Emotions are bigger during these trips because there’s so much new information to process. Peter’s travel quote reveals a truth that many travelers can relate to.

James Michener's Travel Wisdom
If you reject the food & ignore the customs..
28. “You don’t have to be rich to travel well.” – Eugene Fodor
Creator of the famous Fodor Guides Eugene Fodor’s quote helps highlight that people of almost any budget can travel. For example, a few years ago I hitchhiked across the United States for 5 weeks, and it was one of my best travel experiences.
29. “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.” – James Michener
I completely agree with Michener. There’s really no point in traveling to a new country if you’re only interested in staying inside the walls of a resort. I believe that the point of traveling is to learn about new cultures and customs and truly open our minds.
John Steinbeck Travel Wisdom
People don’t take trips…
30. “People don’t take trips, trips take people.” – John Steinbeck
Here’s another quote that isn’t exactly true. While not completely fake, it is a paraphrase of Steinbeck’s actual words in Travels With Charley: In Search Of America that reads:
“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policies and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.”
Going on a trip may start with a lot of planning, but the truth is that once you arrive somewhere new, the area instantly begins to change you.

33. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller
Just like everyone else, I spend some of my days sitting on a couch watching television. Of course, these aren’t the moments that define me, nor are they what I think of when wandering through my favorite memories. It’s the adventurous side of life that makes living truly worthwhile to me.
34. “Travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.” — Paulo Coelho
Yes, travel does require some money. However, you’ll also need to gather enough courage to temporarily cast off everything about your daily life that makes it so comfortable — and boring.

35. “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch

36. “Every man can transform the world from one of monotony and drabness to one of excitement and adventure.” – Irving Wallace

Best Travel Quotes from J.R.R. Tolkien
Not all those who wander…
Quote from Shirley Maclaine
Strangers should be friends.
37. “Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien
Tolkien’s wisdom really shines through in this quote. I have applied it to several of my trips by allowing myself to simply wander through a new land as opposed to plotting everything out first.

38. “The more I traveled the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” – Shirley MacLaine
This quote is as relevant today as it was when it was first uttered. People have an unfortunate tendency to claim others as their enemy without even getting to know them first. This is an issue that’s propagated by fear of the unknown, and it has led to a lot of lost opportunities throughout history.
39. “I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine.” – Caskie Stinnett
Staying in one place for too long definitely makes my wanderlust start itching for a new adventure. Routine has its place, but too much of it makes me feel stagnant. I love shaking up my daily life by visiting a new place and immersing myself inside a different culture.

41. “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” – Roy M. Goodman
Many chase the elusive dream of happiness when they should be embracing it inside of each little moment, as Roy alludes to in this inspiring quote. I learned long ago that happiness is found in the details.
42. “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the trip.” – Babs Hoffman
I used to obsess over every single little thing that could go wrong during a trip. This caused me to overly plan everything. Little things can go wrong anywhere, so they’re not worth worrying about.
43. “Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” – Alan Keightley
One of my favorite travel memories involves sitting on a sidewalk in Nicaragua eating some chicken & rice. I watched local people walk by for at least 30 minutes, going about their daily routines. This simple experience still defines Nicaragua for me in a way that visiting a famous tourist attraction never could.

Susan Sontag Quote
I haven’t been everywhere but…
45. “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag
Every place on the planet has great potential to help us learn and grow. That’s the primary reason that there’s nowhere in the world I wouldn’t go if I had safe passage. Right now, there are some cities and countries that aren’t very welcoming, but I’d still love to see them someday.

Take only memories…

48. “Two roads diverged in a wood and I – I took the one less traveled by.” – Robert Frost
I took Frost’s words at face value in my teen years, but as an adult, I realize there’s much more to his sentiment. Seeing and doing the same things as everyone else can make it difficult to discover your own true identity.
49. “There is no moment of delight in any pilgrimage like the beginning of it.” – Charles Dudley Warner
The start of each new trip is an exciting time that’s characterized by a mixture of wonder and fear. You have no idea if the trip will go as planned, but the unknown is what makes everything so exciting.

50. “Oh the places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

Inspiring Travel Quotes by travel blogger Matthew Karsten
Invest in yourself through travel…
52. “Investment in travel is an investment in yourself.” – Matthew Karsten
Yup. I’m Matthew Karsten, and I totally just snuck in one of my own travel quotes. Haha! But I really mean this too. When I first quit my unfulfilling day job to go backpacking around the world, I didn’t know what I was doing, or where it would all take me. But traveling taught me a lot about life, as well as myself.
53. “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

54. “Our happiest moments as tourists always seem to come when we stumble upon one thing while in pursuit of something else.” — Lawrence Block
There is nothing more exciting than turning a corner while traveling and finding something riveting. I remember this happening when I stumbled onto a work of art by street artist Banksy. I don’t even remember my original destination, but I do remember the way I felt looking at Banksy’s art!
55. “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley
In perhaps the timeliest travel quote of all, Huxley reminds us that countries themselves aren’t bad, nor are their residents. Governments can be corrupt, but the spirit of the people always lives on.
56. “Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac
Is there anyone more uniquely qualified to provide insightful quotes about traveling than the author of “On the Road?” Traveling doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d expect. Despite this, I’ve discovered many times that the trip itself is every bit as exciting as the destination.
57. “Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things — air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. All things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” – Cesare Pavese
Pavese’s books often spoke about loneliness and the inability to connect to others in a meaningful way. Although his commentary on traveling does contain some truth, I’ve always taken it with a grain of salt. Yes, traveling can be brutal at times, but I believe it’s also one of the most freeing experiences a person can have.

58. “And then there is the most dangerous risk of all — the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later.” – Randy Komisar
Many people say inspiring things, but Komisar has lived them as a successful venture capitalist. Don’t fall into the trap of believing there will eventually be a perfect time to follow your dreams. Through traveling, I’ve learned the only perfect time is now.

60. “The journey not the arrival matters.” – T.S. Eliot
Eliot’s poetry inspired countless writers, but I’ve always been the most taken by this simplistic quote. When I first started traveling, I placed way too much focus on getting to my destination. By learning to let that go, I’ve developed some of my fondest travel memories.

Memorable Travel Wisdom

63. “What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do — especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” – William Least Heat Moon
Heat-Moon was so dedicated to writing unique travel books that he journeyed across the U.S. in a 1975 Econoline van. I also love the idea of getting a fresh start in every new town.

66. “The most beautiful in the world is, of course, the world itself.” – Wallace Stevens

Heller’s widely quoted travel adage has influenced the way I travel. I used to pack way more than I needed, and this hindered my travels. Cutting your luggage down and packing more money always makes things easier.
Travel The World Quotes
70. “Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” – David Mitchell
David Mitchell’s best-selling novels typically involve traveling, as evidenced by this quote from “Cloud Atlas.” It’s difficult to get to know yourself when you’re stuck in the rut of normality. I always have the best self-awareness breakthroughs after a period of travel and inner reflection.

72. “I travel because it makes me realize how much I haven’t seen, how much I’m not going to see, and how much I still need to see.” – Carew Papritz
Being born in Yosemite National Park enabled the travel bug to bite Papritz at birth. His thought-provoking spin on the purpose of travel has greatly influenced me. I may never see it all, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.

Traveling is one of the best ways to open your mind and heart to the world. As a result, I’ve experienced the full range of emotions during my travels.

WHAT IS THE BEST ‘WHY DO WE TRAVEL’ QUOTE?
I read this as much less of a quote request, rather a desire to know why we travel. This can be wildly different for each person but reasons to travel include:

To learn
To challenge yourself
To expand your perspective
To appreciate life
To discover more about and get in touch with yourself
To build or strengthen relationships
To have an adventure
To relax
To celebrate
To escape
In line with this, I would recommend the following quotes to fit perfectly into the why do we travel quote request category:
“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

Oh boy, that’s a tough one; as every travel quote speaks to people differently. To that end, my highlights from this list are

The second travel quote by Jennifer Lee is one of my all-time favorite sayings. What I love about it is that it applies to everything- not just travel. It tells you to be bold in pursuing your passions and the things you are interested in. For me, it’s travel. For others, it may be a business venture, a lifestyle change, or even just a big life decision. Whatever you are passionate about, pursue it relentlessly.
Traveling for me puts things into perspective. It allows me to realize that there are far bigger things that my problems. So what if the wifi is slow or if my favorite ramen place is closed. Traveling allows you to see that the world is not always about you. It allows me to see how other people live and what they have to deal with on a daily basis.
Traveling has humbled me and has broadened my perspective in so many ways. Traveling to places like Southeast Asia and other impoverished areas has given me a sense of gratefulness for the modern day comforts that I am able to enjoy.

When I was a child, I used to read books voraciously. I would read page after page and obsess over faraway lands. Only when I started traveling did I realize what the travel quote “it’s better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times.”
As a travel writer, I try my hardest to describe places and destinations of my readers. However, there are just some things and experiences that are too beautiful to put down in words. To me, one of the most beautiful things about travel is the fact that every day is different. There are no routines, no set rules, or no expectations. You can do what you want, whenever you please.
I have been traveling the world together with my partner for over two and a half years now and one of the things we love the most is the freedom that travel and this lifestyle gives us. Travel breaks down routines, monotony and brings back some adventure, excitement, and exploration to people’s lives.

One of my favorite travel quotes of all time!
Often times, I stop and reflect on how travel has changed my life. During these times, I realize how much travel is a part of me. During my teenage years, I would read books and wonder what it would be like to go to all these exotic places.
I never thought this was possible for me but alas, travel opened up so many doors and opportunities for me that often times, I have to pinch myself. For me, travel is living. It is seizing each day and making the most out of every situation.
For me, travel is experiencing things beyond the usual and is consistently challenging, exciting, and fulfilling. I love the quote “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” by Anna Quindlen because I have reinvented myself so many times.
Teacher, to a principal, to backpacker, to travel blogger, and full-time digital nomad. As cliche as it sounds, you can be anything you want to be as long as you have the courage to pursue it.

12. “Work, Travel, Save, Repeat”Travel Quotes | Looking for inspiration? Check out this curated list of the 100 most inspiring quotes of all time.
Coming from the Philippines, saving enough money to be able to do a round the world trip was not easy. I hustled…and I hustled hard. Unlike most first world countries, you can get a part-time job during your university years to help build up your savings.
In the Philippines, as minimum wage is low, you virtually have to work multiple jobs in order to make enough to save which is exactly what I did. I was a teacher at that time and worked from 7am-3pm. Afterwards, I would do private tutorials and work for another 4-5 hours.
At one point, I was earning more from doing extra tutorial work than my job itself. My point behind this is while it seems that all I do now is travel, the quote work, travel, save, repeat is a favorite of mine.
Although I no longer work a 9-5 job, we still apply this theory as we save up for specific trips and holidays along the way.

One of our biggest lessons when it comes to traveling the world full-time is that you DON’T need material things as much as you think you do. When we first left to travel, both my partner and I had huge backpacks filled with unnecessary things.
Now, we both just travel with a carry-on and keep our worldly possessions to a minimum. Travel makes things simpler and has made us realize that material things no longer make us happy. Instead, we choose to spend our money on experiences.
This is why I love the quote by Antoine de St. Exupery (the same author who wrote The Little Prince). It’s just a short travel quote that reminds me to travel light and that joy cannot be physically found in material possessions.
16. “Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca

The quote above is one of my favorite sayings of all time. If there is one thing I know, it is that life is short. We keep saying one day I will travel the world. One day, I will learn how to speak a new language. Guess what folks? Life is short and time will creep up on you.
We don’t even have the certainty that we will live until we are old. So ultimately, if your goal in life is to be happy, then why not pursue the things that do make you happy?
I know this is easier said than done as many of us have obligations and responsibilities but I am one of those people that believe that if you want something bad enough, there is a way to achieve it.
Life is not about making money. Yes, money makes things a heck of a lot more comfortable but are you really willing to sacrifice years and years of your life doing something you hate? So either find a job that you love or find a passion that your job can fuel.
Banking on making enough money so that one day you can pursue what you love isn’t a guarantee. As harsh as this comes across, really take the time to take a look at your life and what you want out of it. I’m not saying everyone should just go quit their jobs and go travel.
No way. I know this life isn’t for everyone but if there is something you’ve been wanting to do but are just too scared to try, then now is the time to pursue it.
19. No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.” – Lin Yutang

This famous travel quote by Helen Keller has been immortalized in so many sayings and articles but nevertheless, it’s message still holds true. Life IS our biggest adventure and if this is truly the case, are you doing everything that you can to actually live it?
There are so many people who get consumed by the everyday motions of life, forgetting that each moment should be cherished and that each moment should be appreciated.
No matter what circumstance you’re in, try to make the best out of every situation. Trust me, changing your perspective and the way you view things will make all the difference.

The quote by James Michener “If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay home.” is something I strongly feel about.
I feel like the whole point of traveling is to broaden your horizon and to get to know what’s around you. Step out of the box and open yourself up to other cultures, traditions, and religions.
I can’t count the number of times I forced myself to try out exotic dishes even if they grossed me out. 3 out of 10, I wouldn’t eat again but at least I tried anyways. In Indonesia, we were invited by a local to his home for some dinner.
The only food he and his family had was some rice and sambal (heaps of homemade chili). Even if my mouth was burning, I finished my plate because who was I to refuse the kindness that someone who opened up his home to us?
I must have finished a pitcher of water but I was still grateful for the chance to get to know him and his family.

The famous quote by J.R.R Tolkien is something I strongly resonate with. In the last few years of our nomadic travel journey, so many people always assume that we are feeling lost because we choose to live our life with no permanent base.
Although we don’t have a house, everywhere we go to, we make a home. We leave a little slice of our hearts in every place we visit and make deeper connections with people we meet on the road that most people make in a lifetime.
It just so happen that we choose to live life wandering as for us, it keeps us excited, keeps us grounded, and reminds us that compassion and kindness is not gone from this world.

Travel Quotes | Looking for inspiration? Check out this curated list of the 100 most inspiring quotes of all time.
I love the quote above by Cesare Pavese. Having been on the road for the last four years, he nailed it spot on. Nothing is certain. Nothing is set in stone.
Friends come and go, transportation breaks down, technology fails us yet at the end of the day, no matter how shitty your day has been, learn how to appreciate the little things in life like sunsets, the sound of the ocean, or a gentle breeze reminding you that you are lucky to be alive.
The one by Lawrence Block, on the other hand, speaks about the spontaneity of travel and how we should be open to these things. My partner and I have completely different travel styles. He is a more spontaneous traveler who doesn’t like to plan anything.
As you can imagine, this drives me nuts at times as I like knowing whether or not I have a place to sleep tonight. After traveling together for almost three years, we’ve compromised on this, meeting halfway in the middle.

After 4+ years of roaming around the world, we realized that sometimes, the journey to a place counts more than the place itself. Travel is about transformation and growth and the journey on how you get there is part of the entire experience.
So while it’s easy to plan out entire trips, it’s also good to go with the flow once in a while and leave room for spontaneity and surprises.
Usually, the experiences that are most meaningful are those that you don’t plan for. Interacting with locals, making new friends, or even getting lost. These are now things that I live for and love the most about traveling

After traveling the world (and spending a lot of money in the process), we realized that no amount of money will ever match the amazing experiences we’ve had.
We’ve camped in barren deserts, driven across countries, explored islands by sailboat, and even lived with fishermen. My point is, things will be things but experiences will last you a lifetime!
Although we don’t own a house, a car, or any of those things that society considers important, for us, having the freedom to experience life and other cultures is what makes us rich.

Have you ever wanted to do something but keep putting it off until you find the perfect time? We’re big believers in pursuing your passion and this means going out of your comfort zone and pushing boundaries. If you want it bad enough, there will always be a way to get it done.
I love this quote by Jack Kerouac as it constantly reminds me that life is short and that we need to actively pursue the things that we want. There is no sadder thing than hearing someone say “someday I will…”

Have you ever dreamed and wanted something so bad and yet you constantly find yourself “frozen”, unable to pursue the things that you really want? Sometimes, we live life in fear and subconsciously settle.
There is no such thing as dreaming too big. I learned this firsthand when I slowly started to courageously pursue what I really wanted out of life. For me, it was to be able to travel and work at the same time.
Now, I can honestly say that I am living my dream life…but guess what? It didn’t really happen overnight. It took years of hard work, determination, and risks.

This quote by Mark Twain is one that has made such a huge impact in my life. The words you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do is so powerful, really making you think.
For me, every time I am faced with a choice, I remind myself that if I don’t take a risk, I might, later on, regret it. With that in mind, I remind myself to try everything at least once, to do things that scare me and put me out of my comfort zone.
Because in the end, I would rather look back at my life and realize that although I may have failed at a lot of things, at least I still tried and took a chance.

Coming from the Philippines, traveling has made me realize that it is really people that make a country, not the other way around which is why I love the quote about Henry Rollins. Although we have a lot of messed up things about our country, the people are indeed some of the kindest and most welcoming people that we’ve met.
All over the world, meeting a fellow Filipino makes me smile as it reminds me that hospitality is a fantastic virtue and that kindness, no matter what social status you belong in is something that should always be extended.
Traveling to other countries also gives me a deeper appreciation towards my home and everything that it can offer.

This particular quote strikes a cord with me as many people usually assume that traveling is only for the rich. To date, some of the best experiences we’ve had was when we’ve stayed with locals, camped in islands, or even slept in people’s couches.
These everyday situations keep us grounded and remind us that traveling is going beyond fancy resorts but is rather all about experiencing the local life and culture around you.

Taking the road less traveled is often hard. There is no clear path towards where you are heading, but those that do take it, know that it will be far more rewarding than just following the rest of the crowd.
Growing up, I was expected to go to school graduate college, get a job, get married, have kids. Instead, I choose to follow out my dreams, pursue the unfamiliar, and create a life that I wanted to live.
Whenever I read Rober Frost’s quote, I always smile a little knowing that I have opted to live life outside my comfort zone…following the road less traveled!

That quote by the late Anthony Bourdain is STILL one of my favorites ever. It sparks such a powerful message which relays that for the most part, adventure and travel is always worth it.
That world knowledge and life experiences from different cultures is really one of the best ways to grow as a person. So many people think they know the world but are only really just seeing it from their TV screens.
In the end, you realize that there is more good than bad in this world and that respecting other cultures comes from experiencing and understanding where they come from and their way of life.

To be perfectly honest, when I first left to travel, I thought I knew what the world was like. I had presumptions about certain cultures and made generalizations.
It was only when I truly started immersing myself in people’s way of life did I understand what it really meant to travel. Traveling isn’t sitting in a resort lounging by the pool. It is experiencing new food, immersing yourself in their way of life, and really taking the time to reflect on this.
These experiences and reflections are what changes you for the good and is what inspires you to keep traveling and keep pursuing the unknown.

Similar to the other travel quotes in this article, the quote below is one of our favorites as it reminds us to be cautious of how we travel. Over the last few years, we’ve committed towards traveling more sustainably, aware that we all need to do our part to help the earth.
Often times, we take the beauty of the earth for granted and refuse to change our ways simply because it isn’t convenient. Whether it is refusing plastic bags in shops or even something minute as bringing your own cups, these small changes can help make a bigger impact…if only everyone did it.

Jack Kerouac (March 12, 1922 – October 21, 1969) was an American novelist, considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation. His most well known novel is On The Road (1957), but also wrote other well-received novels such as Dharma Bums (1958) and Big Sur (1962).

And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.

11 reasons why every Muslim should travel
THARIK HUSSAIN
/
10TH FEBRUARY 2015
Advertise with Halal.Ad
I take off at every opportunity I can, be it with family, friends or alone, exploring, photographing and documenting interesting stuff in exotic destinations and taking the odd selfie to make friends jealous along the way (actually I rarely go to exotic destinations and am still struggling to work the ‘selfie’ feature on my phone – although my wife and daughters are usually on hand should the need arise!).
1234981_10151562536375493_2076109999_nBut as a Muslim Travel Writer living in challenging times, I’ve come to see travel in a completely different light; as an education and spiritually transformative experience. I also now understand why travel is encouraged by Islam – why else would we be able to collapse our prayers? But what I don’t understand is the lack of Muslims willing to travel. And before you bombard me with your messages and selfies from Dubai and Sharm, let’s just make clear that a package holiday to a touristic location geared to all your expectations and creature comforts is not ‘travel’. That would be a holiday. I believe all Muslims should really travel, the proper independent stuff and here are eleven reasons why (beyond just being able to collapse our daily prayers – so technically that’s 12!):
1. The Hajj (or Umrah)
Travel is integral to many ‘spiritual’ aspects of Islam. Most notably the pilgrimages of Hajj or Umrah, both of which require Muslims to travel to Makkah, a journey that has always been viewed as much a transformative experience as the Hajj or Umrah itself – something great Muslim travellers like Ibn Battuta and the Victorian explorer Richard Burton have testified in their memoirs. On top of this both the Hajj and Umrah involve numerous rituals of motion and travel, such as the tawafs (initial and farewell) around the Ka’ba, the walk between Saf’a and Mar’wah, and the (Hajj only) journeys to Mina, Mount Arafat and Muzdalifah. Each of these demands the pilgrim meditates and reflects whilst moving.
2. The Prophet
Travel was openly encouraged by the Prophet Muhammad who saw it as an essential way to seek knowledge. Preserved narrations such as the oft-cited “seek knowledge even unto China” support this. Then there is the Prophet’s highly spiritual experience, the ‘night journey’ or Meraj in which he ascends through the Seven Heavens, meets the prophets of before and receives instructions from God about the daily prayers. This journey, which most scholars believe happened before his emigration to Medina, was intended to strengthen his resolve and inner belief about his own prophethood. Finally, much of the Prophet’s formative years were spent travelling with his family’s business caravans all over the Middle East. These travels later had a profound impact on his ability to respect difference and empathise with different cultures.
IMG_53323. A travelling tradition
Muslims come from a long line of famous travellers who were transformed irreversibly by their experiences. This includes the world’s most travelled man, Ibn Battuta who was born in Tangier, Morocco and travelled for 30 years after setting off for the Hajj in 1325 aged only 21 (one might say he was the first ‘gap’ year student!). Muslims scholars also deemed it important to travel and often covered great distances to acquire knowledge like the Sunni Muhaddith, Muhammad al-Bukhari. Finally there are many prophets who embarked on monumental spiritual journeys that transformed their character and strengthened their inner resolve. The most famous of these is Musa’s journey (Moses) alongside al-Khidr.
2010-10-26 13.36.054. The spirituality of Travel
“Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler along a path”, this is a popular hadith about attachment to the material world and it is therefore no surprise that every spiritual tradition in Islam (and most other faiths) incorporates ‘wandering’ or ‘travel’ as part of the soul’s training. The wisdom behind this is to encourage detachment to the dunya (material world), i.e. make it ‘strange’ to the spirit, and thereby develop a greater appreciation of the hereafter. Following his spiritual crisis, the great medieval theologian Abu Hamed Muhammad ibn Muhammad al Ghazali – often called the ‘Proof of Islam’ – embarked on just such a journey.
IMG_60685. Love of God
Through travel we get to know God better, it’s that simple. I have had some of my most spiritual moments staring out across a mountain range, a desert, lake or even just humanity going about its daily existence. Travel makes the familiar unfamiliar to us and in doing so we come to better appreciate God’s creation. Throughout the Qur’an verses ask man to reflect on what has been created on earth and in the heavens – what better way to do that then through travel?
6. The death of ignorance and birth of humility
Nothing quite extinguishes ignorance like real life experiences. In an increasingly global world saturated by media, we find it easy to sit on one side of the world and judge people on the other. Using video, news articles and pictures it is easy to arrogantly believe we know a people or a place just by how media has represented them. Yet the very meaning of ‘media’ is that it is in the middle of reality and a mere representation of it. It is not the reality. Travelling to places we have judged or thought we knew is the best way to realise this, because it teaches us just how wrong we can be and addresses our ignorance. Travel makes us see that actually we know very little.
Bristol en route Budapest 02-01 (7)7. Know thyself
Talk to anyone who has ‘travelled’, especially solo travellers and you will be blown away by their self-confidence, open-mindedness and how well they seem to know themselves. Travel creates a better you, because it takes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to ask questions about who you are, why you are and what you are. As Muslims we believe there will come a time when we have to stand alone in front of our Creator and be cross examined. Travel allows you to cross examine yourself without the expectations of society, culture, religion and family. Those who have done this will tell you that nothing is more liberating than having only your own expectations. But be aware this can be quite scary the first time because you might suddenly realise that actually you don’t have that many expectations of your own.
IMG_71818. Experience something ‘new’
The world is an amazing place full of amazing experiences waiting to be had. To not enjoy any of them whilst you’re here seems such a waste. In an age where travel is becoming increasingly cheap and methods of income ‘on the road’ to fund those travels, increasingly flexible, few excuses remain to not go off and try to see the world at least once. Those who don’t will never see a sunrise over an ancient man-made masterpiece like Macchu Picchu; they won’t ever listen to the silence of a natural wonder like the Sahara desert; nor will they taste the sweetness of a star fruit freshly shaken from its tree by Bangladeshi village children, and they certainly won’t experience the joyous smells of a thousand spices as they stroll through a real Arabian bazaar .
9. Appreciate what and who you have
We always take our parents, brothers, sisters and homes for granted but spend a few months on the road and then taste your mother’s home cooking or listen to your father’s boring stories of old. Come back after a month euro railing and see if your sister is actually as annoying as you thought or your older brother as overbearing as he seemed. ‘Absence makes the heart fond’ they say, but what that really means is you finally see what God has blessed you with.
1385628_10151640191810493_1818417409_n10. Regain your faith in humanity
One day I am going to write a book about the kindness of strangers on my travels for those people who were also born into a ‘world’ that seemed difficult to trust. It was travel that regained my faith in humanity.
From the gypsies in the hills of Tuscany who drove my family and I up a mountain to catch the last bus to Omar, the Turkish man who we fell in love with after he spontaneously took us on a road trip through rural Turkey, I have had beautiful encounters with strangers all over the world and come to realise that actually people are amazing. Growing up in 1980s inner city London, that was difficult to imagine. I now know that the vast majority of human beings in the world are caring, wonderful and respectful people – the very embodiment of what it means to be ‘human’.
IMG_661911. Islamic history
Head to my blog and check out the previously unheard of Islamic stories of Europe uncovered on my travels, like the discovery of a Muslim Dracula; the Christian island where the lingua franca is Arabic or the story of the Christian boy who grew up to rule the Ottoman empire and you will appreciate the vast amount of heritage just waiting to be unearthed (and this is just the tip of the iceberg). By travelling to places significant in Islamic history, whether it be Medina or Cordoba in Spain, we come closer to our roots, our past and our heritage. It is only by knowing where we came from, can we truly know where we are travelling to.

Say, [O Muhammad], Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allah, over all things, is competent.
The Quran calls us to travel
The Quran calls us to travel
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
Throughout the Quran life is described as a journey, and knowledge and ignorance as light and darkness on its way (e.g. 6:122, 13:16, 24:35, 24:40, 27:86, 35:19-20, 37:5, 40:61, 84:18-20).
However, besides numerous references to this spiritual journey, special emphasis is also laid on physical travel.
The word ‘saiyr’ – which means travel or move (e.g. a planet is ‘sayyarah’) – with all its variations, appears in the Quran total 27 times. Many of its usages are in the formulation of ‘Do travel’, ‘Tell them to travel’, or ‘Do they not travel?’.
The Quran promotes travel as a potential pilgrimage, since during travel one passes by numerous ‘ayah’ or divine messages (31:31, 12:105, 22:46; cf. 45:3, 10:6). Also, man’s ability to travel is described as a special honour endowed to man as part of man’s exalted status above all natural Forces (17:61, 66, 70).
Travel, tour and navigation demand geographical and astronomical information as well as nautical, aeronautical and astronautical knowledge. Because scientific data about natural objects (explored messages of nature) give man orientation and power, they are described in the Quran as directions of paths, like landmarks and guiding stars:
And He it is who has set for you the stars that you may guide yourselves by them in the darkness of the land and the sea. We have detailed Our messages for a people who possess knowledge. 6:97
And He it is who has made the sea subservient …
And He has placed firm mountains on Earth, lest it sway with you, and rivers and paths, so that you might find your way,
And landmarks; and by the stars they are guided. 16:14-16
He it is who has made the Earth a cradle for you, and has traced out for you ways therein. 20:53
While thus encouraging travel in general, the Quran also strongly recommends travel when it has a specific, positive purpose: travel to trade, search, explore, visit, migrate, enjoy, learn, study and so on.
Travel to read divine messages
The Quran promotes travel as a potential pilgrimage since during travel one passes by numerous ‘ayah’ or divine messages that declare God’s oneness and greatness (cf. 45:3, 10:6):
Have you not seen the ships speeding through the sea, carrying God’s provisions, so that He might show you some of His wonders? Herein, behold, there are messages indeed for all who are patient, grateful. 31:31
And how many a Message in the Heavens and the Earth which they pass by, yet they turn away from it! 12:105
There is a call for travel in order to read these messages by searching new information and experience-based knowledge and thereby to acquire wisdom:
Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the minds which are in the foremost. 22:46
Translated here as ‘minds’, the word ‘quloob’ signifies ‘sites of intellect or understanding’ (as defined in 6:25), whereas the word ‘sadr’, translated here as ‘foremost’, has a metaphoric connotation, and – since in Arabic it has the connotation of chest, top, foremost or upper part of anything – indicates brain as well.
Travel for trade and commerce
The Quran encourages travel for trade and commerce – which generates mutual profit and benefit through exchange of commodities and export-import – while depicting it as a great way to get some of the divine blessings:
Your Sustainer is He who causes the ships to move on for you through the sea so that you may go about in quest of some of His bounty: verily Most Merciful is He towards you. 17:66
And in the ships that speed through the sea with what benefits man … there are messages for a people reasoning. 2:164
Then, once the contact prayer is ended, disperse through the Earth and go in quest of some of divine Bounty, and remember God frequently, so that you may succeed. 62:10
Travel to explore new horizons
Another emphasized purport of travel is searching and exploring new lands and areas, new possibilities, potential resources and richness of various cultures:
And on that one sees ships ploughing through the waves, so that you might go forth in quest of some of His bounty, and thus have cause to be grateful. 16:14
And you see the ships cleave through it that you may seek of His Bounty and that you may be thankful. 35:12
It is God who has subjected to you the sea that the ships may run thereon by His command, that you may seek of his Bounty, and that you may be thankful. 45:12
Travel for recreation
Travel even for simple pleasure, in the form of recreational tourism, is also encouraged:
He it is who enables you to travel by land and sea; until when you are in the ships, and they sail on with them in a pleasant breeze, and they rejoice. 10:22
Lawful for you is all water-game, and all the catch of the sea, as enjoyment for you and for those who travel. 5:96
And among His signs is that He sends the winds with glad tidings, and to give you a taste of His grace, and so that the ships might sail by His command, and that you might go about in quest of some of His Bounties, that you may be thankful. 30:46
Travel to learn from visiting new places
The Quran encourages travel that aims to visit new places as a means of learning:
Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46
Have you not seen the ships speeding through the sea, carrying God’s provisions, so that He might show you some of His wonders? Herein, behold, there are messages indeed for all who are patient, grateful. 31:31
Travel to immigrate
We are asked to fight or flight. Fight against oppression or, if this is not an option, flight to seek refuge elsewhere. When we fail to freely express our opinions or practise our decent values in a particular country, we should try to emigrate to another which is more suitable for the purpose. Thus travel with intent of immigration, whenever essential, is prescribed, while apathy and self-harm are condemned:
Was God’s Earth not spacious enough that you could emigrate in it? 4:97
Those who have emigrated for God because they were oppressed, We will grant them good in this world, and the reward of the End will be greater, if they knew. 16:41
Travel to study evolutionary science, palaentology and anthropology
One of the highlighted purposes of travel is searching, exploring and learning about origin and evolution of Universe, life and man:
Do they not see how God originates creation, then reproduces it: surely that is easy for God.
Say: Travel through the Earth and deeply observe HOW God did originate the creation; then God produces the next creation; surely God has power over all things. 29:19-20
Travel to study archaeology and history
Over and over again the Quran emphasizes the importance of travel with a purpose to study archaeology and the history of nations and humankind in general, including causes of rise and fall of previous peoples and civilizations:
Do they not travel through the Earth, and deeply observe what was the End of those before them? 47:10
Have they not travelled through the Earth and deeply observed the consequences for those who were before them? 40:82 Please refer to similar statements in 35:44 and 40:21.
Travel to learn from the past
Then we are invited to ‘travel through the Earth’ so that we can learn lessons from the past. What happened to all those great powers and civilizations of the past? One needs to travel, both physically and conceptually, to search and explore the history and the driving forces behind it:
Say: Travel through the Earth and deeply observe how was the End of the rejectors. 6:11
Ways of life have passed away before you. So do but travel through the Earth and deeply observe how was the End of the rejectors. 3:137 Similar verses are e.g. 16:36 and 27:69.
The Quran asserts that the cause of the causes of the decline and fall of a civilization is people’s rejection of the divine oneness – expressed as their denial of the unity of nature and the unity of humanity. This denial leads to the rejection of human’s ultimate responsibility for his conscious actions, and this, in turn, leads to cognitive and moral bankruptcy – i.e., unscientific attitude to nature and life, and subsequent socio-economic and political chaos – and so to the downfall of communities and civilizations:
Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what men’s hands have earned, and so He will give them a taste of some of their deeds, in order that they may turn back.
Say: Travel through the Earth and deeply observe what happened in the end to those before you: Most of them worshipped others besides God.
Set then your face steadfastly towards the system which is straight. 30:41-43
Here the growing pollution and destruction of our natural and social environment (‘Corruption has appeared on land and sea’), so seriously demonstrated in our time, is predicted as a consequence of man’s self-destructive – because utterly materialistic – inventiveness and frenzied activities (‘because of what men’s hands have earned’) which now threaten the human existence itself with previously unimaginable ecological and socio-economic disasters: an outcome of man’s oblivion of God and, hence, of moral values, and his delusion that ‘material progress’ is the only thing that matters.
We are asked to learn lessons from history of the extinct civilizations who likewise worshipped material comfort, ego and power, as well as worshipped various false idols like messengers, avatars and other sanctified creatures (‘Most of them worshipped others besides God’). They thus lost harmony with natural laws and moral values – which are based on the unity of nature and the unity of humanity and which have their ultimate foundation on God’s oneness – and, as a consequence, destroyed themselves.
A call of cheer for the traveller
However, the Quran also positively reminds the traveller, who is wandering through the pages of history, that – as rain vivifies a barren land – man’s conscious effort can as easily create a civilization out of ruins:
Was it not a lesson for them, how many generations We annihilated before them, in whose dwellings now they do walk about? Certainly there are messages in this: Will they not then hear?
Do they not see that We drive the water to the barren land, then We bring forth thereby crops of which their livestock and they themselves eat; will they not then see? 32:26-27
Summary
Throughout the Quran life is described as a journey, and knowledge and ignorance as light and darkness on its way (e.g. 6:122, 13:16, 24:35, 24:40, 27:86, 35:19-20, 37:5, 40:61, 84:18-20).
